Hailu Shawel, right, one of the four main leaders of the Ethiopian Coalition for Unity and Democracy, answers a question from a foreign correspondent as his three colleagues, from left to right, Prof. Mesfin, Birtukan Midek, and Berhanu Nega listen to him, at the Crime Investigation Commission's headquarters, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Sunday, Nov 27, 2005.

Ethiopian Review reports that CUD leader, Hailu Shawel is seriously ill. He was taken to a hospital yesterday (December 13). The unjustly imprisoned leader has been on a hunger strike since November 28.

Ethiopian Media Forum is also reporting that he was taken to a hospital for treatment, but had been denied medical attention. “This is a deliberate attempt to physically harm Mr. Hailu Shawel.” Their reporter added, “EPRDF authorities have denied intense medical assistance to Mr. Hailu Shawel and other CUD leaders.”
