US-based Group Asks Sharon to Stop Cooperation with Zenawi

Ethiopian Americans for Democracy (EAD), a US-based advocacy group, today asked Prime Minister Ariel Sharon of Israel to stop military and other cooperation with Meles Zenawi, Ethiopia’s beleaguered Prime Minister.

In a letter addressed to Sharon, EAD said Meles’ November trip to Israel was a desperate attempt to get Israel to keep his sinking regime afloat and to plead with the United State on Meles’ behalf.

EAD cited the current state of terror in Ethiopia as one reason for Israel to distance itself from the regime. The group pointed out that at least 88 people have been killed and perhaps as many as 30, 000 arrested since the fraudulent elections in May 2005.

The top leaders of the opposition Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD) are among those arrested.

EAD also pointed out the 14-year rule of Mr. Zenawi that has been marred by human rights violations and extra-judicial killings, including the massacre of some 424 people in the Gambella region in 2003.
