Rebels in Ethiopia Ask for Peace Talks

IOL -- A separatist rebel group has asked for talks with the Ethiopian government to end a low-level conflict in the lawless east.

The Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF), a group of ethnic Somalis fighting for independence from Ethiopia, called for international mediation in a neutral foreign country.

"ONLF is ready to engage in negotiations with the Ethiopian government in order to find a just and lasting solution to the conflict between the people of Ogaden and Ethiopian regime," the group said in a statement released this week.

The government said Prime Minister Meles Zenawi welcomed the move in a written response to the rebel group that roams the vast, dry region.
