Some say this week’s protests and arrests in Ethiopia could lead the country's ruling EPRDF party to renege on liberalization, and return to a more repressive, totalitarian approach to governance.
Getachew Metaferia is a professor of political science and international studies at Morgan State University in Baltimore,Maryland. He told Voice of America reporter William Eagle that Ethiopia has always had authoritarian governments, and the current one is no exception. He encourages outside actors to pressure the government to dialogue with the opposition, and to hold an open and transparent vote count.
